The Short Answer
Short answer: the best office Christmas party ideas are the ones your room can hold. An awards night needs a stage and something standing behind it, while a dessert station or a gift exchange needs one good corner and little else. So choose the room first and the idea second, because your own office, a restaurant’s private room and a hall each let you put up very different things.

Ten office Christmas party ideas, and what each one needs
1. A year-in-review awards night
Speeches and awards need somewhere to happen, and a bare wall behind a lectern photographs like a meeting. Our sequin shimmer wall is photographed in that job: champagne gold tiles behind a lectern on a stage, with a balloon column either side. Add the year in light-up marquee numbers. They stand four feet tall and rent at $80 a number, so 2026 across the front of the stage is four numbers and $320.
It needs: a stage or a clear end wall, and a power outlet within reach of the numbers.
2. Black and gold
A palette that reads as a party without reading as Christmas. Gold mirror orb balloonsstand in a cluster at the foot of the stage, and because the finish is a mirror they pick up whatever the room’s lighting is doing. Black and gold tassel tail balloons float above head height on long fringed tails.
It needs: floor space beside the stage for the orbs, and ceiling height for the tassels, with nothing hanging in the way.
3. Casino night or a murder mystery dinner
Two of the classic themed nights, and worth being clear about who does what. The gaming tables and dealers, or the actors, come from a specialist company. A decorator adds the room around the game: an entrance that sets the theme, and a backdrop for the photographs people take in costume.
It needs: the floor plan for the tables settled first. The decor fits around them.
4. Winter white
Ivory and pale dusty blue with a pearl sheen. Our ceiling helium balloons are photographed in that palette, sitting up at ceiling level with their strings hanging down the wall. Put the white sofa with gold legs underneath as the seat for photographs. It is also the theme to reach for if not everyone on the team celebrates Christmas.
It needs: a ceiling the balloons can rise to.
5. An ugly sweater party
The cheapest idea here, and the one that needs least from a decorator. The sweaters are the decor. The one thing worth paying for is a place to take the group photo, because the photo is the reason anyone wore the sweater.
It needs: a wall wide enough for the whole group, and clear floor in front of it.
6. A dessert, cookie-decorating or hot chocolate station
An activity and a focal point in one. A sweet cart ($130, with a white or lilac tray) or a three-tier display table ($130) holds the station. The swing table ($230) is a suspended dessert table that becomes the centre of the room. We rent the table. The cookies come from your caterer or your baker.
It needs: a spot away from the door, where a small crowd will not block a walkway. The swing table needs a firm, level floor.
7. A gift exchange or Secret Santa table
The gifts are the decor, if they have somewhere to go. A round display table ($150) with a printed sign turns a pile on the floor into a display, and it gives the exchange a place for people to gather.
It needs: one corner.
8. A toy or food drive at the entrance
Put the collection where everyone walks in and it becomes part of the party instead of a box by the photocopier. A printed sign and a balloon column either side of the drop-off mark it.
It needs: space inside the door that the coat line does not need, agreed with whoever runs the drive.
9. A lunch party in the office
The simplest way to celebrate Christmas at work: food in the boardroom or the kitchen, a balloon garland, a dessert table and a group photo, all cleared before the afternoon. It suits a team that cannot do an evening, and a company that wants everyone there, including people who do not go out at night.
It needs: the room booked for the morning setup as well as the lunch, and the building’s delivery and sign-in rules.
10. A room that is already dressed
Some rooms come decorated for the season. The Ottawa Christmas Market at Lansdowne Park rents its chalet for private hire, and its own website lists holiday parties and corporate gatherings among the uses. A room like that needs little from a decorator, perhaps a welcome sign or a dessert table. If that is your room, we will say so.
It needs: nothing, or close to it.
The Room Decides
What your room lets you put up
Your own office
The room people work in all year is the hardest to change and the cheapest to book. Setup happens over a lunch window or after work, and the room has to be usable again by the next morning.
Most office buildings also have rules about what can be fixed to the walls or the ceiling grid, so freestanding pieces do most of the work. Everything we build as a backdrop stands on its own frame.
Then there are the outlets. Anything lit, marquee numbers or a string of lights, needs mains power within reach, and Health Canada’s holiday safety advice says never to run cords through or across doorways, or under carpets, where they can be pinched, trip someone or overheat. In an office that decides where the lit pieces can stand, so send us where the outlets are with the floor plan.
The Room Decides
A restaurant’s private room
For a team of about 30 or fewer, a private room is often the whole answer, and it changes the decor question: the tables are yours and the walls are the restaurant’s. Two Ottawa examples, from their own pages:

Neither restaurant publishes a rule on decorations, so ask before you plan anything for a wall. Mati’s semi-private dinners are three-hour seatings starting at 5:00 or 5:30 pm, or from 8:30 pm to close. When the seating is the whole booking, plan decor that goes on the tables in minutes rather than a build, and ask the restaurant when you can get in.
That means centrepieces (we quote guest table styling by table count), menu and place cards, a welcome sign at the door, or a balloon bouquet beside it. With the food already on a minimum spend, keep the decor small and put it on the table, since that is what everyone sits looking at all night.
The Room Decides
A hall or a hotel ballroom
This is where a full build fits: an entrance, a photo spot, the stage and the tables. What each hall supplies, and when a decorator can get in, changes from one hall to the next. We compared nine of them in our guide to banquet halls in Ottawa.
Hotels publish less. The holiday party pages of Brookstreet and the Lord Elgin, read on September 23, 2026, carry a menu and a phone number and list no decor at all. Ask what the room comes with, a lobby tree, centrepieces, linens, before you pay for any of it twice.

What a decor setup changes at a work party
It decides where people stand
A photo backdrop collects a queue in front of it, and a dessert station pulls a crowd into its corner. Plan the floor around those spots before you choose pieces, above all in an office, where the desks and the boardroom table stay where they are.
One finished spot beats a little of everything
A backdrop with a garland over it, or one styled dessert table, makes a room read as decorated. Tinsel on every surface reads as clutter, and it takes longer to put up and take down.
It has to come down again
Rental pieces, the tables, carts, numbers and backdrops, are delivered, set up and collected. Balloon work is different: it is a consumable install rather than a rental we take back, so if you want a garland removed and disposed of after the party, ask for teardown as its own line on the quote.

A small office

A big group

Mixed Teams
If your team does not all celebrate Christmas
Hanukkah 2026 begins at sundown on Friday, December 4 and ends at nightfall on Saturday, December 12. So the evenings of Friday the 4th, Saturday the 5th and Friday the 11th all fall inside it. Those are three of the four nights our guide to when to book an office Christmas party counts as realistic for a company party this year, and it ends at nightfall on the fourth, Saturday the 12th.
A winter theme, winter white or black and gold, works on any of those nights without putting one holiday at the centre of the room. We work in English and Arabic, and printed signs can carry both.
