Five towns that agreed on one name in 2002
Gatineau is not a suburb of Ottawa and it is not part of the City of Ottawa. It is the fourth-largest city in Quebec, 291,041 people at the 2021 Census spread over 341.84 square kilometres, and it was created on 1 January 2002 when five municipalities were merged: Aylmer, Buckingham, Gatineau, Hull and Masson-Angers.
The merger did not settle the argument. De-amalgamation referendums in the four former municipalities that held them cleared the required 35 per cent turnout and were then defeated by a majority in each. The sectors kept their names, their histories and their sense of themselves, and people here still say they live in Aylmer or in Hull rather than in Gatineau, unless they mean the Gatineau sector itself. Population sits 45.4 per cent in that sector, 29.2 in Hull, 15.9 in Aylmer, 5.1 in Buckingham and 4.3 in Masson-Angers.
For a decor studio that has to arrive somewhere with a loaded van, the practical consequence is simple. Here, the word Gatineau names a region rather than an address.

Which sector, and which crossing
Twenty kilometres, or forty-one
Every figure here is a straight line from our studio coordinates, 45.2369668 and -75.7323867, to the published coordinates of the place named, which means you can check it. None of it is a drive time. The Aylmer sector centre is about 20 kilometres from us and sits to the northwest. The Maison du Citoyen, in the Hull sector, is about 21 and sits almost due north. Pointe-Gatineau is about 27. Masson-Angers, at the far eastern end, is about 41 and swings around to the northeast.
Our service area page gives Gatineau a single figure of about 28 kilometres. That is the city centroid and it is accurate, but it conceals a spread of more than twenty kilometres between one sector and another. Aylmer is a shorter run for us than the eastern end of Ottawa is; Masson-Angers is the longest run we make anywhere.
Then there is the part no supplier on the Ontario side can design away. Five interprovincial road bridges join the two cities: the Macdonald-Cartier, the Alexandra, the Portage, the Chaudière and the Champlain. The National Capital Commission puts more than 150,000 vehicles and over 9,000 pedestrians and cyclists across them on an average day, with the Macdonald-Cartier carrying the most. Every one of those trips has four alternatives, and no more.
So the crossing gets chosen from your sector rather than from a map, the van leaves earlier than it would for an equivalent address inside Ottawa, and the setup window is planned with slack in it. That is the entire adjustment. It is unglamorous, and it is the difference between arriving with time to fix something and arriving without it.

The city publishes the list of its own halls
A useful starting point on the Quebec side is that the City of Gatineau rents municipal space itself and publishes what is available. Nine halls sit inside the Maison du Citoyen: the Agora Gilles-Rocheleau, the Salle des Fêtes, Salle Gatineau, Salle Jean-Alie, Salle Lafontaine, Salle Mont-Bleu, Studio la Palestre, Salle Philemon-Wright and Salle Jean-Despréz. The city describes them as suiting a meeting, a conference, a show, a 5 à 7 or a wedding.
Old Aylmer keeps its own set at the Centre culturel du Vieux-Aylmer, listed as Atelier 1, Atelier 3 and the Cabaret La Basoche. The same municipal listing also covers halls in the Buckingham and Masson-Angers sectors, the Pavillon Hélène-Larochelle at Parc du Lac-Beauchamp, and Place Laval. Private rooms sit alongside them: the Royal Ottawa Golf Club, which despite the name is on chemin d'Aylmer in Gatineau, runs weddings and events from its clubhouse, and Rivermead in the Aylmer sector has been there since 1910.
Those hall names carry the local history rather than decorating it. Philemon Wright founded Hull in 1800, three decades before Bytown became Ottawa. Mont-Bleu is the Hull neighbourhood where the Quebec-side damage from the tornado outbreak of 21 September 2018 was concentrated, and rebuilding there was still going a year later.
A civic multipurpose room, a cabaret and a clubhouse dining room are three different installs, and the questions we ask are the same in all three: the ceiling height where the arch or the flower wall is going, whether the lighting can be dimmed or is fixed at one level, which door the load-in uses and how close a vehicle can park to it, and where the working outlets actually are. Rules, capacity and timing belong to the venue and you should get those from the booking office rather than from us. Our job is to design backdrops and florals and to bring the rental pieces that fit whatever the room turns out to be.
Outdoor dates on the north shore
A river with a long memory
The Ottawa River is the reason both cities are here, and it is also why an outdoor date on the north shore deserves an extra question. Major flooding hit in 2017, 2019 and 2023. CBC reported 3,800 homes and cottages affected in Gatineau in the spring 2019 flood alone. None of that makes a May garden reception a bad idea. It makes ground condition something to settle early rather than discover on the morning.
On a lawn, a park or a riverside property, three things decide whether the design survives contact with the day: whether the ground is firm and level enough to stand columns, arches and weighted stands safely, how long the power run is to an outlet you are actually allowed to use, and what the covered fallback is if the forecast turns. Lac Leamy sits inside the city and Parc du Lac-Beauchamp has a pavilion the city rents out, so on some sites that fallback is on the same grounds as the lawn.
Settling all of it in advance is the planning half of the work, and it is the half that decides how the day runs. Printed pieces belong in that conversation too: welcome signs, seating charts, table numbers and menus are set exactly as you supply them, so spelling, accents and which language leads are decided at the design stage.

Those are not the same morning, the same crossing or the same load-out. Send the venue name and its address and everything after that gets simpler.
Does crossing a bridge change how you plan our setup?
It changes the margin rather than the method. Five road bridges link the two cities, the Macdonald-Cartier, Alexandra, Portage, Chaudière and Champlain, and the National Capital Commission counts more than 150,000 vehicles plus over 9,000 pedestrians and cyclists across them on an average day, with the Macdonald-Cartier the busiest. One closed lane pushes that traffic onto the remaining crossings. So we pick the crossing from your sector, load earlier than for an equivalent Ottawa address, and keep slack in the setup window.
Do you work in French?
Our public record does not establish French-language service, so this page will not claim it. Ask before you book and you will get a straight answer instead of a hopeful one. It is a fair question here: at the 2021 Census 71.1 per cent of residents gave French as their mother tongue, 11.8 per cent gave English, and 63.5 per cent were fluent in both. What we can be exact about is printed material, which is set precisely as you supply it.
Does a Quebec address change the paperwork?
It can, because you are buying in another province. Sales tax on work performed in Quebec follows Quebec rules rather than Ontario ones, so ask any supplier quoting a Gatineau date to itemise the tax line rather than assuming it matches an Ottawa quote. Quebec also licenses construction trades separately, through the Régie du bâtiment du Québec, with electrical and mechanical work under the CMEQ and CMMTQ. That regime covers construction, so ask each supplier what applies to them.
