A winter wedding in Ottawa works best when it is planned around two numbers: sunset at about 4:22 pm on December 21, and a January that averages -9.6 °C with snow on the ground nearly every day. Hold the ceremony and reception under one roof, take photos before dark, and choose decor your venue allows indoors.

What a winter wedding in Ottawa is up against
Ottawa winters are cold and they are white. Environment and Climate Change Canada's 1991 to 2020 normals for the Ottawa CDA station put the daily average at -5.1 °C in December, -9.6 °C in January and -8.1 °C in February.
Snow is close to certain. The same normals count about 30 days with at least 1 cm of snow on the ground in January, and 28 in February. Plan as if your guests will walk through snow from the car to the door, because most years they will.
The light is the bigger constraint
The cold is easy to plan for. The dark is what catches couples out. Sunset in Ottawa falls at 4:22 pm on December 21, 2026, and the earliest of the year is about 4:19 pm on December 10 (sunrise-sunset.org).
It moves later quickly after New Year: 4:30 pm on January 1, 5:08 pm on January 31, and 5:28 pm on Valentine's Day 2027 (timeanddate.com). A 4 pm ceremony in December finishes in the dark. The same ceremony in mid-February finishes in daylight.
Why winter dates are easier to book
Fewer couples marry in winter, so more dates are open. Statistics Canada's most recent monthly breakdown, for 2008, found January the least popular month for weddings in Canada, with 2.8% of the year's marriages. August had 22.2%.
February and March each had 3.7%, and December 4.3%. That pattern is the reason a winter date gives you more choice of venue and suppliers than a summer Saturday, which many couples book six months to a year ahead.
How to plan the day around a 4:30 sunset
Work backwards from sunset, not forwards from the ceremony. Three changes make the biggest difference:
- Move the ceremony earlier. A ceremony at 1 or 2 pm in December leaves daylight for portraits afterwards.
- Take the portraits first. A first look before the ceremony puts the outdoor photos in the best light of the day.
- Plan the evening for the room. By 5 pm the windows are dark, so the decor and lighting carry every photo after that.
Outdoor photos in the snow
Keep outdoor portraits short and close to the door. At -9.6 °C on an average January day, twenty minutes outside is plenty for a wedding party in dress shoes.
If you want an aerial shot over the snow, check the rules first. The National Capital Commission says you must have a permit to fly a drone over NCC-managed lands, and recreational drone use is not permitted in the Greenbelt or Gatineau Park.
Venues that hold the whole day under one roof
In winter, a venue that hosts the ceremony and the reception in one building saves your guests a second trip through the snow. A few around Ottawa say so on their own sites:
- Strathmere, North Gower: offers fireside indoor ceremonies in winter and in bad weather. Its outdoor ceremonies run April to November.
- Canadian Museum of Nature, Ottawa: its spaces hold wedding ceremonies and receptions for up to 200.
- Fairmont Le Château Montebello, Quebec: about an hour east, with a horse-drawn sleigh to the entrance and a fire in its log-cabin lobby.
For a small outdoor ceremony, the NCC says the Mackenzie King Estate grounds in Gatineau Park are open year-round and popular for small weddings, with a reservation required. In winter its museums are closed and none of its trails are plowed. Our guide to wedding venues in Ottawa lists more rooms by size.
Winter wedding decor that works in Ottawa venues
Winter decor has to work in a room that is dark by 5 pm. That makes lighting the first decision, not the last. As a wedding planner in Ottawa, we choose draping, candlelight and backdrops against your actual venue, because the rules differ from one room to the next.
Candles and open flame
Some Ottawa venues allow real candles in holders. Others allow no open flame at all. Read the venue's rules before you fall in love with a candlelit table, and ask us for flameless candles where the room says no.
Pieces that suit the season
- Warm lighting on draping and backdrops, so the room glows in photos after dark.
- A ceremony backdrop indoors, where a summer couple would use the garden. Our backdrops and floral walls are built for exactly that.
- A welcome table by the coat check, the first thing guests see after they stamp off the snow.
- White, evergreen and metallic palettes, which read as winter without leaning on Christmas.
If you are styling most of it yourselves, single pieces such as an arch or a backdrop come from our wedding decor rentals in Ottawa.
Winter dates worth knowing in Ottawa
The city has its own winter calendar, and it can make a wedding weekend better or busier:
- Winter Lights Across Canada: December 7, 2026 to January 7, 2027, lit every evening on Parliament Hill, the national museums and other sites in Ottawa and Gatineau (Canadian Heritage).
- Winterlude: January 29 to February 15, 2027, the festival's 49th edition, with ice sculptures and the Snowflake Kingdom at Jacques-Cartier Park.
- Rideau Canal Skateway: 7.8 km, free and open 24 hours a day when it is open. The NCC says the season typically runs from January to early March and depends on the weather.
A Winterlude weekend gives out-of-town guests something to do the day after. It also fills hotels, so book room blocks early if your date falls inside it.
How we run a winter wedding
Sparkle Events is based in Nepean, and every installation is set up before guests arrive and collected at the venue's teardown time. Setup and teardown are written into the itemized quote.
In winter that matters more, because a short day leaves less room between a venue opening its doors and the first guest arriving. We read each venue's rules before we choose draping, candlelight or a backdrop, and build the ceremony-to-reception turnaround into the timeline if the same room has to change.
If you have planned the day yourselves, day-of coordination takes your plan and confirms it with every supplier in the week before. Our guide to what a wedding coordinator does in Ottawa explains the difference from full planning.
Winter wedding in Ottawa: common questions
Where is the best place to have a winter wedding in Ottawa?
A venue that hosts the ceremony and the reception in one building, so guests never go back out in the snow. Strathmere offers fireside indoor ceremonies in winter, and the Canadian Museum of Nature holds ceremonies and receptions for up to 200.
What is the cheapest month to get married?
January is the least booked. Statistics Canada found it the least popular month for weddings, with 2.8% of the marriages in 2008, and the lowest numbers ran from January to April. Fewer weddings means more open dates. Ask each venue and supplier for its winter rates, because they set them.
How much does a wedding cost in Ottawa?
It depends on the guest count, the venue and how much of the room you decorate. We quote decor itemized, line by line, and our guide to [wedding decor cost in Ottawa](/blog/wedding-decor-cost-ottawa) shows what drives the number.
Is it too cold for outdoor wedding photos in Ottawa?
Not if you keep them short. January averages -9.6 °C, so plan about twenty minutes outside close to the door, in daylight. Sunset is at 4:30 pm on January 1 and 5:28 pm on February 14.
Where can you go in Ottawa in winter with wedding guests?
Winter Lights Across Canada runs from December 7, 2026 to January 7, 2027, Winterlude from January 29 to February 15, 2027, and the Rideau Canal Skateway usually opens in January when the ice allows.
