The gold dome is cut through rather than solid, so light passes it and the cut pattern shows as a silhouette. On a table with candles or uplighting behind, that is what you notice from a distance. Set it flat on an unlit surface and you lose most of the effect, so if you are using these, plan for light behind or beside them rather than only overhead.
